The New York Times Best of Saturday Crosswords 75 of Your Favorite Sneaky Saturday Puzzles from The New York Times The New York Times Crossword Puzzles Will Shortz 9781250055910 Books Reviews

  • These are difficult puzzles. The clues are very brief and often suggest a multitude of possibilities or no possibilities, at least at first. Many people only work the Sunday New York Times puzzles and believe that they are the most difficult. No, not at all. The puzzles grow in difficulty from the easy Monday puzzle to the (sometimes painful) Saturday puzzle. I would strongly suggest that if you are not familiar with the level of difficulty, you try a few online first. For those of us who don't live in New York, you can usually work a few puzzles on line for free, and you can buy a subscription only to the puzzles for an entire year, which is what I do.

That said, for times I am up to the challenge, these are terrific. The size is convenient, not too big and not too small. I do wish the pages would lie flat, but they don't, and I don't like to rip them out. I first work the puzzles on the right-hand side of the page just for those reasons. When I finish the entire book of right pages, then I will either tear the others out one by one to work them or just toss the book. It would be nicer to have a spiral binding, so I could just work them in order.

The puzzles are challenging, but once you've gotten a word or two in any block, the rest will come easier than you first thought possible. They are wonderful for those days when I really want to use my brain. On days I want a simpler puzzle just to fill a lazy lunch-hour at work, I will print out a different level puzzle, my favorite being the Sunday puzzles because of the size.
  • I especially like the Saturday puzzles, which I think are more challenging than the Sunday puzzles. (The Sunday puzzles aren't necessarily difficult for an experienced fan; they just take longer to fill in.) But, as I pointed out in another review, there are too many in this book that appear in other compilations. If I'm paying for 75 puzzles, I don't want to see 20 or so of them that I've just completed in some other recent compilation.
  • As far as the challenge & difficulty of the clues, this rates 5 stars. However, the print is very small and the grids are tiny about 3 - 1/2 by 3 - 1/2 inches. I wish these puzzles came in a larger, easier to read version.
  • Who can say anything against New York Times crossword puzzles? They're terrific. However, the print in this edition is SMALL. Be prepared to get out your magnifying glasses, because half the challenge in solving these puzzles will be reading them.
  • Tough, tough, tough. I think I have completed one out of 12 so far. I do not look up answers (Google or x-word sites) until I am done with a book.
  • A great puzzle book, good size for travel, not too big or too small; Almost too hard on a couple. I rate each puzzle when I am done... (I know; Get a life!) I have finished 22 and 4 were rated (
  • The NYT puzzles are brutal, especially in the Saturday edition, but fair. It takes a while to solve them in most cases, but then I bought them because I wanted something to occupy my time and they certainly do that. I'm enjoying these tough puzzles knowing that they can be solved.
  • Truly hard! Truly enjoyable! I hope Shortz publishes more Saturday/Friday puzzle collections.
