First published over 40 years ago, this was the first text on the identification of organic compounds using spectroscopy. This text is now considered to be a classic. This text presents a unified approach to the structure determination of organic compounds based largely on mass spectrometry, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and multinuclear and multidimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The key strength of this text is the extensive set of practice and real-data problems (in Chapters 7 and 8). Even professional chemists use these spectra as reference data. Spectrometric Identification of Organic Compounds is written by and for organic chemists, and emphasizes the synergistic effect resulting from the interplay of the spectra. This book is characterized by its problem-solving approach with extensive reference charts and tables.

The 8th edition of this text maintains its student-friendly writing style - wording throughout has been updated for consistency and to be more reflective of modern usage and methods. Chapter 3 on proton NMR spectroscopy has been overhauled and updated. Also, new information on polymers and phosphorus functional groups has been added to Chapter 2 on IR spectroscopy.

"badly written and poorly organized. This is just another hastily thrown together book written by a professor to earn some extra money. Do yourself a favor and buy "Introduction to Spectroscopy" by Daniel L. Pavia. It has it's flaws but it head and shoulders above this book.

Spectrometric Identification of Organic Compounds Robert M Silverstein Francis X Webster David J Kiemle David L Bryce Books Reviews

  • I have read this book cover to cover at three different points over the years, and I must say that this is a highly recommended resource for anyone needing a primer in spectroscopic techniques. This book has been a faithful friend since my undergrad years and now well into my seasoned academic career. Sure there are other books, but it is hard to find such a concise yet reasonably comprehensive resource which holds your hand when navigating a plethora of techniques used for organic molecular structure determination. It is a great reference for day-to-day analysis in the lab and conveys complex concepts in rather simple terms. The best part is the problem set, which really makes you work your brain and tremendously help in absorbing those concepts.

Ok, enough about the book - the seller is an absolute pleasure to deal with as well. The book is packed carefully and it arrived unscathed through the normal postal service.

Both the book and the seller are highly recommended
  • This book is required for my Organic Spectroscopy class. Supposedly, another version of this book has the answer key for the practice problems in it. THIS VERSION DOES NOT HAVE THE ANSWERS TO PRACTICE PROBLEMS IN IT. I remember looking at an almost identical "Student Version" of the book on too; not sure if the answers are in that one or not, but other than the words "Student version", I couldn't figure out the difference between these two. I haven't seen the other one, so I can't say. The only downside is the difference between the versions of the Eight edition not being clear.

Other than that, I really like the textbook so far. It is short and easy to understand. I've only been working with the Mass Spec chapter so far, but it provides a lot of good information on interpreting EI spectra, and some on CI spectra as well.

  • A fine book for undergraduate structure determination of organic chemicals using spectroscopic data. Very affordable price. Very fast shipping and delivery.
  • The text is dense and poorly explained, but the book is worth the money for the end of chapter problems and chapters 7-8.
  • My favorite book that I've purchased so far in grad school. (Medicinal Chemistry, 2nd year) 2D NMR is so incredibly helpful for small molecule elucidation. Now, any time someone in my lab needs 2D NMR, they ask me for help!
  • great service, fast delivery, product exactly as advertised, thanks, theboobooman
  • I used this book for a class and then kept it because it's such a great reference. I learned a great deal just reading the book, but the practice problems are great. You can't expect to be a whiz just from reading the book, and the practice problems really help illustrate the points they outline in the text.
