Aging with Care Amanda Lambert 9781538125991 Books Reviews

  • I heard a podcast that mentioned this book and then I saw it at my local library on the "featured books" shelf. I flipped through the book and was impressed. Instead of checking the book out from the library, I went home and ordered the book on . I just finished reading it. Wow, this is such a helpful resource for taking care of aging parents. The authors provide a lot of sample letters/documents, sample template checklists, sample template questions to ask when interviewing potential in-home caregivers, sample template questions to ask when taking a tour of a nursing home, and tons more. They also give lots of website links for various resources. I found particularly helpful their explanation of how the payroll taxes work for hiring in-home caregivers, their explanation of the different types of caregiving titles, etc. I highly recommend this book to anyone caring for aging parents.
  • Everyone I know has either dealt with aging parents, are dealing with it now or will soon deal with it. Lambert and Eckford give a detailed account of what to expect dealing with the pitfalls and the successes of helping elders stay in their homes with help. With this readable, entertaining book (many real life stories are related), I felt like I learned the pros and cons of privately hiring help vs. hiring an agency. I was discouraged after I read the chapter entitled "Throwing In the Towel" but then in the next chapter entitled "Creative Solutions More than one way home," I learned many new ideas and businesses that are available to us now. Everyone needs to read this book because even if your parents are no longer with you, we will all be making these decisions for ourselves one day.
  • in Aging with Care, Eckford and Lambert address the pros and cons of using an agency or hiring caregivers privately and the book is filled with great information and helpful tips about both. Full disclosure — I own and run a small senior care agency so I am a bit biased. I know many informal care arrangements work out well but there are a lot of pitfalls which Eckford and Lambert address in the book. Reading the book as an agency owner, I found myself with pen in hand underlining like crazy. For instance, the section on privacy made me realize that I need a much clearer, written policy on client privacy.

Not only is the book full of very helpful information, it is well written and filled with interesting and informative anecdotes. This is definitely a book anyone dealing with seniors should read.

  • Aging With Care is a must read, well written, comprehensive guide for family members with parents that are in need of home caregivers! No two individuals are alike just as no two families are alike. Various options are clearly explored with pros and cons for each that are helpful in making an informed decision in an otherwise stressful confusing situation. This book includes real life stories, interviews with professionals, agencies you can contact, terms you may not understand and many examples of what has been done in the past. Why reinvent the wheel on your own?! Read The Book! The only regret I have is that this was not written five years ago when I was just starting this process. However, I have Post-its on many pages and use it frequently as a resource. What I took away from this book, and my own experience, was that you want to keep your family member happy and safe. And that nothing is static. You will need to reevaluate your original decisions as your parent's condition changes over time.
  • This thoughtful book is not only an invaluable resource but a gift in its truest sense to those of us who are planning ahead or are faced with urgent care giving decisions for a loved one. The text is appropriately readable with essential and practical information, anecdotes, and helpful interview content but it is not an easy read. Rather it is a resource that needs to be digested in small bites! My suggestion for those who need specific information quickly is to go to the index to refine your search, then to the summary and talking points to locate specifics. Those who are planning ahead will find the chapter summary and talking points a useful guide. I found the "look inside" button on the website very useful for previewing this timely book - thanks to the authors for this multifaceted resource!
  • I know the author, Leslie. Her life’s work has been nursing, inspired and informed by unique family circumstance. When faced with caring for aging parents, she encountered every challenge one can face long distance care (many states away), elder broken bones and surgery, parents determined to stay in their home, companion pets, dementia, natural disaster with trees falling on the house and all the time managing 24/7 healthcare providers long distance.

This book is not only to help us all navigate the challenges of caring for aging parents, but should help inform us all how to best become aging parents. and has given the rest of us documented advice grounded in personal experience.
  • If you have an elderly parent, family member or friend that needs or will need a caregiver, this book is indispensable. Finding a good caregiver is hard. This book helped me sort through the many complicated issues that accompanied the task of hiring someone to take care of my elderly parents. It provided me with perspective and helped answer many, many questions. Best of all, the book prepared me for what was to come and what to look out for. It was really, really helpful. I refer to it often.
  • This is an excellent reference for anyone trying to navigate the complex issues of hiring caretakers for loved ones. The authors obviously have personal experience with this, and can help with the important decisions of finding the right agency or private individuals to care for aging parents. They give thorough and reasonable rational for many scenarios--learn from their experiences (good and bad), and make the best decisions for your family!
