"read this book while writing my supplements for Yale. the personal statements could be useful if you didn't start yours yet and wanted to read some examples, but as of 2018, most of the supplements are pretty outdated, with the exception of the "why yale" question. also, there really isn't any proof that these were real students that got into yale. all we have is the author's word and although I don't want to discredit someone I don't know, I also think it's important to maintain a degree of skepticism towards the book because unlike some other college essay books i have no idea what the author's credentials are"

The Road to Yale Application Essays and Resumes that Wowed Yale Admission Officers Shixia Huang Grace Li Sharon Li Lynn Han Wendy Peng 9781545066553 Books Reviews

  • I’ve been looking for a book like this since 10 years ago when my older kid was in middle school thinking about colleges. Over the years, I’ve read over 20 college application and essay books but really wanted to see the real profiles from accepted students. However, whenever I asked parents whose kids were admitted into Yale or other top colleges, often, I was told that they did not do much, parents did not know what the kids did, or it was too private to share. Some generous parents did tell me some achievements by the students, but I never had the opportunity to see the whole picture connecting school and summer activities, awards, essays and other parts of the application such as high school courses and short questions and answers. Therefore, I always wondered exactly what the students I knew did to be accepted into those top colleges.

The resume and high school courses are not available in any other book I’ve read or tried to find. By reading this book, I felt that I knew most students through their personal stories linked with their activities and years of hard work. I could figure out what each family had done over the years and how long the students have spent on some activities, since the resumes include activities before high school.

I am happy that my younger one has the opportunity to be inspired by students in this book. The awards and summer activities give me great idea on summer plan and profile enhancement too. With what I know now, I would have benefited from reading this book when my kids were in elementary school. Definitely a must-have for families with 6th graders and up if you ever think about a top college, a state university’s honors programs, or scholarships in any colleges.

I often purchase books as holiday and birthday gifts and now this book is on my top list for parents with grade school students.
  • I bought this book for my niece who is a rising high school senior this fall and getting ready to apply for college. This is surely an enjoyable read for anyone ever wonders what the application packages from the students who get into the nation's top colleges look like - are they all academic geniuses, child prodigies, or widely sought after top-notch athletes? After finishing reading this book, while there is some truth to my assumption, I feel mostly this is a book by some “real” high school students with whom I can actually relate to. Sure, they were all outstanding students, and did some amazing things outside classroom during their high school years, but honestly none of these achievements appear to be unattainable for anyone with good and strong work ethics, character and passion. I found it to be especially helpful with the essays put together “as is” in their raw format - these were the actual essays the college admission officers read and the decisions were based upon. What sets this book apart from other books of similar topic is the fact that it contains 15 complete sets of essays required for Yale admission – the Common Application essay, the Yale supplementary essay, the Why Yale essay, and the additional short questions. Furthermore, the College Preparation Timeline from beginning of middle school to the end of high school, the Why Yale story by the editors, and the 15 student profiles provide excellent additions to this already valuable resource. In my opinion, it ought to be on the desktop of every high school student with aspiration of getting into his/her dream college!
  • read this book while writing my supplements for Yale. the personal statements could be useful if you didn't start yours yet and wanted to read some examples, but as of 2018, most of the supplements are pretty outdated, with the exception of the "why yale" question. also, there really isn't any proof that these were real students that got into yale. all we have is the author's word and although I don't want to discredit someone I don't know, I also think it's important to maintain a degree of skepticism towards the book because unlike some other college essay books i have no idea what the author's credentials are
  • I wholeheartly recommend "The Road to Yale" for every student applying to college and to Yale in particular. This is the only book that provides very detailed descriptions of a student's extracurricular activities in the context of their application as a whole. Now, as the parent of a college student at a highly selective university, I have heard many stories of students with stellar grades and test scores being disappointed about not getting into their dream school; I have also heard students who have crafted their application to be so coherent and strong that they gain admission. When my child was applying to college, we had to look at a bunch of different books to figure out how to piece together academics, essays, and extracurricular activities into a strong application. We read "50 Harvard Essays," "Fiske guide to college essays..." etc. but still needed to adapt our answers to Yale. Having "The Road to Yale" would have made our process so much easier, because you can see the complete application, including supplements, for each student in the book.

Specifically, for Yale, as for other Ivy-Leagues, I have noticed that each school seems to prefer certain qualities (sometimes different qualities) in their students. If you are wondering what Yale admission officers prefer, reading this book should give you a good idea of common characteristics in the accepted students at Yale.

Since reading this book. I've recommended it to each one of my friends with children applying to college and they have told me it is very useful. Going to Yale may not be everyone's dream, but reading "The Road to Yale" will help your child get to his or her dream school.
  • My daughter is interested in applying Yale. She is a junior now. This book is helpful for her and me (parent).

First published over 40 years ago, this was the first text on the identification of organic compounds using spectroscopy. This text is now considered to be a classic. This text presents a unified approach to the structure determination of organic compounds based largely on mass spectrometry, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and multinuclear and multidimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The key strength of this text is the extensive set of practice and real-data problems (in Chapters 7 and 8). Even professional chemists use these spectra as reference data. Spectrometric Identification of Organic Compounds is written by and for organic chemists, and emphasizes the synergistic effect resulting from the interplay of the spectra. This book is characterized by its problem-solving approach with extensive reference charts and tables.

The 8th edition of this text maintains its student-friendly writing style - wording throughout has been updated for consistency and to be more reflective of modern usage and methods. Chapter 3 on proton NMR spectroscopy has been overhauled and updated. Also, new information on polymers and phosphorus functional groups has been added to Chapter 2 on IR spectroscopy.

Spectrometric Identification of Organic Compounds Robert M Silverstein Francis X Webster David J Kiemle David L Bryce Books Reviews

  • I have read this book cover to cover at three different points over the years, and I must say that this is a highly recommended resource for anyone needing a primer in spectroscopic techniques. This book has been a faithful friend since my undergrad years and now well into my seasoned academic career. Sure there are other books, but it is hard to find such a concise yet reasonably comprehensive resource which holds your hand when navigating a plethora of techniques used for organic molecular structure determination. It is a great reference for day-to-day analysis in the lab and conveys complex concepts in rather simple terms. The best part is the problem set, which really makes you work your brain and tremendously help in absorbing those concepts.

Ok, enough about the book - the seller is an absolute pleasure to deal with as well. The book is packed carefully and it arrived unscathed through the normal postal service.

Both the book and the seller are highly recommended
  • This book is required for my Organic Spectroscopy class. Supposedly, another version of this book has the answer key for the practice problems in it. THIS VERSION DOES NOT HAVE THE ANSWERS TO PRACTICE PROBLEMS IN IT. I remember looking at an almost identical "Student Version" of the book on too; not sure if the answers are in that one or not, but other than the words "Student version", I couldn't figure out the difference between these two. I haven't seen the other one, so I can't say. The only downside is the difference between the versions of the Eight edition not being clear.

Other than that, I really like the textbook so far. It is short and easy to understand. I've only been working with the Mass Spec chapter so far, but it provides a lot of good information on interpreting EI spectra, and some on CI spectra as well.
  • badly written and poorly organized. This is just another hastily thrown together book written by a professor to earn some extra money. Do yourself a favor and buy "Introduction to Spectroscopy" by Daniel L. Pavia. It has it's flaws but it head and shoulders above this book.

  • A fine book for undergraduate structure determination of organic chemicals using spectroscopic data. Very affordable price. Very fast shipping and delivery.
  • The text is dense and poorly explained, but the book is worth the money for the end of chapter problems and chapters 7-8.
  • My favorite book that I've purchased so far in grad school. (Medicinal Chemistry, 2nd year) 2D NMR is so incredibly helpful for small molecule elucidation. Now, any time someone in my lab needs 2D NMR, they ask me for help!
  • great service, fast delivery, product exactly as advertised, thanks, theboobooman
  • I used this book for a class and then kept it because it's such a great reference. I learned a great deal just reading the book, but the practice problems are great. You can't expect to be a whiz just from reading the book, and the practice problems really help illustrate the points they outline in the text.

Welcome to Travers Corners, a dusty Montana town where nothing much has happened since Herbert Hoover stopped for gas. Travers Corners, like most small towns, has no newspaper, no radio station; but here, large trout—no, better than large trout, fictitious trout—await the angler. And apart from spreading gossip outside the McCracken’s General , the residents of Travers Corners love nothing more than fly fishing.

Scott Waldie’s delightful cast of characters breathes life into this tiny, out-of-the-way town. Meet Judson C. Clark, boatbuilder and sometime guide down the waters of Carrie Creek. Jud’s best friend, Henry, knows his way around just about everything, and has a story and a laugh for everyone. Meet Dolores, the belle of Travers Corners; Sarah, who fled from New York City in search of quiet and community; Doc, who loves his profession and fly fishing—and not necessarily in that order; Ed, the mechanic who is too patriotic to work on imports; and so many more enormous personalities.

Waldie’s warmth, wit, and shrewd eye for characterization evoke a deep nostalgia for times past and quirky communities. For fly fishers everywhere, Travers Corners will be a second home.

Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Travers Corners Classic Stories about Fly Fishing and a Small Montana Town Scott Waldie Books Reviews

  • I have not read such a book with describable characters such as these in a long time. From the beginning of the book to the very end, I found it to be very insightful, nostalgic, and filled with some memorable tales within the whole book. For anyone who values the quiet and simple life of a small town and its history - as well as some very good descriptions of down home, friends, relationships and some trips down memory lane, this book is tops in my library. I am looking forward to reading the second and third parts of this trilogy.
  • There's something for everyone in Scott Waldie's story of eccentric characters living on the Madison River. The historical connection was fun in this book and cleverly made by the author. We can always count on the good guys winning the day in each story, even though they are challenged by the eccentricities of flyfishermen. It may seem like the village is a figment of the imagination, but I suspect that each plot invention has a close cousin in real life. I like to read the Travers Corners trilogy every year or so, just to keep the smile on my face.
  • Fishing is the framework, but life is the flesh on the bones of great story telling. This is the first of a trilogy, and all are strong tales that bear multiple readings.
  • Each story was was perfect in length and content. Characters are memorable and fun plus they tend to remind me of folks I have met. Can't wait to start the next book.
  • a little schmaltzy.
  • Mr. Scott Waldie's series Travers Corners are such a delight... if you have ever lived in a small town, you will relate to all these characters. Bought our first book (which we loaned to someone and lost) in Montana on one of our annual fly fishing trips and fell in love with it.

You wont be disappointed.. you WILL purchase the entire series once you read the first one!

    Rhonda - Seattle, WA
  • One enjoyable walk through a small Montana town. Fly fisher or not you will find, as we have, that you keep returning again and again.
Jud (one of the main characters), his friends and neighbors have come to feel like personal friends. We love these stories and highly recommend the trio of books to any and all that we meet. My favorite stories period.
  • Humorous take on what it is like to live in a very small Montana community where peoples lives are open books.
